Posted in Uncategorized, Vietnamese GRAMMAR - VĂN PHẠM Tiếng Việt by vietnamese4u on June 3, 2009

There are 3 main expressions to ask a Yes/No Question in Vietnamese:

1/ Expression #1: statement+ “không?”

Using: used to ask someone whether that thing is right.

=> to answer this kind of question, you have to know which one is the main word in the sentence.

Ex:
- Q: Em yêu anh không? (You love me or not?)
A: yêu (for yes) // không (for no)

- Q: Cô ấy trông xinh không? (She looks pretty or not?)
A: xinh (for yes) // không (for no)

> Some of the same forms:

* S + “có” + …. + “không”?

Ex:
- Q: Em yêu anh không? (You có love me or not?)
A: có (yes) / yêu (love) // không (no)

* statement + “chứ?”

Ex:
- Q: Em yêu anh chứ? (You love me?)
A: vâng (yes) // không (for no)

* statement + “phải/đúng không”?

Ex:
- Q: Anh biết tôi, phải không? (You know me, right or not?)
A: Phải (right) // Không (no)

2/ Expression #2: statement + “được không?”

Using: used to ask someone whether that action is suitable or not, or used to require help of someone politely.

Ex:
- Q: Anh vui lòng giúp tôi, được không? (you please help me, could or not?)
A: được (for yes) // không (for no)

- Q: Tôi có thể giải bài toán theo cách này, được không? (I can solve this arithmetic problem by this way, can or not? )
A: được (for yes) // không (for no)

3/ Expression #2: statement + “rồi chưa?”

Using: used to ask someone whether his task/ his action is finished or not, or whether he has done something yet or not.

Ex:
- Q: Anh đã ăn tối rồi chưa? You ate dinner already or not? (Have you eatten dinner yet?)
A: Rồi (for yes) // chưa (for no)

- Q: Anh đã làm xong công việc rồi chưa? You did finished task already or not? (Have you finished doing your task?)
A: Rồi (for yes) // chưa (for no)

* Note: the viet native usually uses the expression statement + “chưa?” (without the word “rồi”), it is a short form of expression statement + “rồi chưa?”

    Could you explain to me, what is the difference in using “co…khong” , just “khong” and “phai Khong” in the exambles above?
    Kindest regards,
    Birgit

      “có…không?” and “…không?” are the same, no difference about meaning, I think it is equivalent to “do you…?” in english

      “…, phải không?” is used to confirm a thought whether it’s right or not, it is equivalent to “you …, don’t you?”

    Thank you so much.
    I was also very happy to see, how you explained “roi chua”.
    It has always confused me.
    Thanks again.
